DETAILED RULES AND EXPLANATIONS – YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE!

1. YOU MUST WEAR AN OUTFIT FROM TAYREN’S FANTASY FASHIONS (TFF) OR HIG’S. This includes our special freebies, so NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY. You will simply qualify for different categories of prizes based on your choice.

The outfit MUST recognizably be a design by Tayren Theas or Hig Bing. You can tell by the package, contents, and enclosed landmark who is the creator.  Do not use just a small part of the outfit like a hat, shoes or necklace, with the rest coming from some other store. You may customize your hair, skin, shape, shoes or minor accessories, but the majority of the outfit must be Tayren’s or Hig’s. You MAY blend Tayren’s and Hig’s outfits.

Tayren’s Store: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nightless%20Isle/165/195/22

Hig’s Store: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nightless%20Isle/182/58/22

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You may enter more than one category, you may use more than one outfit, and you may post multiple pictures (up to 4 per day), provided they are not very similar. We tend to only judge your personal best shots, so be selective. Too many photos won’t really help you and will only slow us down.

b) You will not have a higher chance of winning based on how much you spent at our stores. We will give equal consideration to all contestants.

c) You MAY use an outfit you previously purchased from either Hig’s or Tayren’s stores at some other time. We will check sales records to be sure when it was purchased.

d) If your friends are in the picture, the same rules about the costume apply to them.

e) You have equal chance of winning, regardless of whether the outfit you used in the photo was from Tayren’s OR Hig’s.

2. YOU MUST TAKE THE PICTURE ON NIGHTLESS ISLE.

The picture must recognizably be a location on the beautiful Nightless Isle in Second Life. We must be able to see enough in the picture to tell where on the island it is located. There are many amazing locations available, including the North Pole, the beautiful fairy valley, and more. You can be inside or outside.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nightless%20Isle/136/189/23

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You may use poses that are there, or rez your own poses (up to 20 minutes rez time is allowed on the land). You may rez minimal additional props (up to 25 prims) but you will be judged for how you creatively incorporate the existing props already on the island.

b) NO SEX PICTURES, NUDES, OR SEX POSEBALLS PLEASE – Please keep naughty bits covered.

c) You can tell a story with your pictures if you want, and some people choose to, but it is not required. You may depict any holiday you celebrate in winter, or make it just a simple winter shot.

3. THE PICTURE MUST BE POSTED ON THE FLICKR GROUP BY THE DEADLINE OF December 23rd, 2016, by MIDNIGHT SLT.

You can post the photo to the Flickr group, OR upload to SL and send it to Tayren Theas or Hig Bing, and they will do it for you. If you are uploading to SL, the pic should be should be shot at square 1024 x 1024 and sent by NC to one of us with required info. To preserve resolution and aspect ratio – instead of uploading in SL you can also send with required info to tayrentheas@hotmail.com. TO GUARANTEE POSTING ON TIME, IT IS BEST TO POST IT ON FLICKR YOURSELF.

HERE IS THE FLICKR GROUP: http://www.flickr.com/groups/holidayphoto

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You may enter and post *different* photos as many times as you like. Please don’t enter the same picture more than once. The person posting is the primary “entrant”. We reserve the right to not accept repetitive or highly similar photos.

b)  You may invite friends into the picture, but each photo can only be posted by one of the people in the picture – in other words you all cannot spam the SAME photo to Flickr.

c) If you are in a group of two or more, the main entrant will need to divide the winnings as she or he pleases in agreement with your friend(s). The free outfit vouchers you win will be transferable gift cards that you or a friend can use.

d) Your photo having a lot of “faves” on Flickr will NOT increase your chances of winning the contest. This is NOT a popularity contest and not everyone has a ton of connections in there.

e) Feel free to share the photo with friends or other groups on Flickr, provided you are within the group’s and Flickr’s rules of course!

4. THE PICTURE MUST BE HIGH QUALITY/HIGH RESOLUTION.

Your picture must be high resolution (at least 1017 pixels or higher in one or both directions, the higher the better, either square or rectangular). Lower res photos will not be considered. Amateurs and Professionals alike are welcome to enter. If you are obviously a professional SL photographer or fashion blogger we will weigh your picture-taking experience level. Neither amateurs or professionals have a higher chance of winning.

If you are unsure how to take a high resolution picture, here is some good info.

Tutorial – Taking high-res blog snapshots by Strawberry Singh

strawberrysingh.com/2010/04/12/tutorial-taking-high-res-b…

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You MAY apply filters or effects in Flickr, Photoshop, Gimp or other software, provided it is still recognizably our outfit and our island. If you add filters or effects, please state as such on Flickr. Please don’t add things to the image that are not there, like real people, clip art, or bits from other photos or pictures. Over-editing is not suggested. We want to see our outfits!

b) You may choose your own windlight settings, or use the one on Nightless Isle. Please state the settings you used, if they are different than our island’s setting.

c) You can enter more than one picture and enter in different categories, but please do not “spam” us with multiple highly similar pictures (i.e. the same pose and outfit at slightly different angles). This will not enhance your chances, and you can lose creativity points.

d) Refrain from using SL “snapshots” of the kind that are immediately uploaded directly to SL, because they typically distort the image, change the aspect ratio (“squish” it too narrow), and force it into square 512 x 512 size (too low to qualify). You should choose a high resolution and save directly to your hard drive instead, then upload to Flickr or send in email (tayrentheas@hotmail.com) or on Notecard with required info to us. If you do not know how else to take an SL picture other than the “snapshot”, read the link provided above.

e) We retain the right to use your entry photos on our island or within our SL store (for example for posting the winning pictures, for writing a blog post or notice about the event, for showing some worthwhile entries that were not necessarily winners, or for spotlighting the creative uses of our outfits by our customers). We will not use any photo without crediting you as the photographer, and we will not edit and/or otherwise use your photo to make our own clothing ads.

5. YOU MUST FOLLOW ALL RULES, including posting Required Info in Description:

You must follow rules 1-4 above PLUS enter all Required Info as we have asked for it. You will lose points if you do not.

Required Info: You MUST enter this information on your description in Flickr or send it on Notecard or email to us. Tayren’s email is tayrentheas@hotmail.com.

Go Medieval on Cancer at the RFL UAC Medieval Faire!!

Snapshot_004

The Gates to the UAC Medieval Faire, open from June 17 – 26, 2016

Huzzah! The Second Annual Relay for Life UAC Medieval Faire is underway, now through June 26, 2016!

This Faire is similar to a real life “Ren Faire” and is part of Relay for Life of Second Life, benefiting the American Cancer Society with sales of medieval-themed wares and donations at various events such as trivia contests, jousting, and musical performances. A full schedule of events and list of shops can be found on the UAC Medieval Faire website.

The UAC Medieval Faire is located in Second Life at this location (must have SL account):

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Carima%20Stadt/9/126/22

The Faire, a part of the Unmasking a Cure team’s several yearly RFL events, is currently being featured as an Editor’s Pick in the Second Life Destination Guide. This is quite an accomplishment for an event only in its second year!

Educator’s Note: How is the UAC Medieval Faire Educational? People can learn about ways in which they can help fight cancer, and also learn about Medieval times by engaging in many authentic Medieval-style events at the faire!

Interview with Mary Teodosio, General Manager of the UAC Medieval Faire

The Faire’s General Manager, Mary Teodosio, is the Team Captain of RFL of SL’s Unmasking a Cure team. I caught up with her to ask her a little bit about the faire.

Me: Mary, can you tell me how you got involved in Relay for Life?

Mary: I became involved in RFL when I was asked to host an event through my Tiny Empires kingdom for another team. I had extensive real world fund-raising experience and knew that I could do more than a single event. This led me to form a team, with my good friend, Jean Munro.

Snapshot_023

Mary Teodosio at the UAC Medieval Fairegrounds. Sim designed by Geryn Sloan.

Me: How did you come to establish the UAC Medieval Faire? What ideas did you draw from?

Mary: The medieval faire was a natural progression from the Grand Joust that our team was already hosting, run by Ricci Juliesse. In 2015 Nyza Stillwater approached me and indicated he was helping with the Joust but would like to expand it further by adding events and changing the format to resemble something closer to a real-world Renaissance Faire. I give all due credit to Nyza for his brilliant idea and starting what will, arguably, be one of the ‘go to events’ of the Relay season.

Me: How has the faire grown from last time?

Mary: This year, the faire has doubled in the amount of merchants we have participating! We had around 25 merchants last year and have expanded that to over 50.  We have brought our En Garde Tournament and our Trivi-a-thon under the umbrella of the faire. In addition we expanded our entertainment by adding more DJ-driven sets and live performers. We will have a full lineup of live music on the closing day.

Shopping for Medieval-Style Clothes, Accessories and Decor at the UAC Medieval Faire

Me: What is your personal favorite part of the faire?

Mary: My favorite part has been experiencing the overwhelming generosity of spirit and cooperation from the merchants, entertainers, and role-players. I have learned so much through this process. The most important lesson learned is how important the SL community believes Relay For Life is, and the need to find a cure.

Me: Is there anything else you would like to tell potential visitors about the faire?

Mary: To all the potential visitors; thank you for your interest in the faire and we hope you visit! Please remember that RFL events are PG; you should expect to see child avatars on sim and we respectfully request PG conduct and dress. We have plenty of beautiful costumes and accessories being sold at the faire to help get you into the spirit of Medieval times! I’d also like to invite you to join in all the tournaments. Our Medieval Combat groups put on a heck of a show, but they are always seeking new members to join the fun. So if it LOOKS FUN, DO IT. You can find all the equipment you need right here at the faire!

Medieval Style Games at the Faire, Coordinated by Ricci Juliesse

Jousting and other medieval-style sporting games are an integral part of the UAC Medieval Faire, and anyone is welcome to join. There are many free tools available for jousters and medieval sport players at the faire. I chatted with Ricci Juliesse, one of the UAC Team’s leaders, about her important role in the sporting games at the faire.

Me: Ricci, can you please tell me about your role in the faire?

Ricci: I am the Medieval Games/Sport Coordinator. I schedule, run and makes sure that the 4 different tournaments (Jousting, Archery, Melee and Horse Racing) run smoothly and efficiently.

Snapshot_005

Ricci Juliesse at the UAC Faire on her jousting horse ‘Spirit’, in full jousting regalia.

Me:  Can anyone join in these games? What kinds of skills are required?

Ricci: Yes the Games are open to the public. As for the skills needed, it really depends on the sport. For instance in jousting, one would need a working knowledge of how to ride a horse and use a lance. For Melee, one would need a working knowledge on Medieval combat. Archery is probably the easiest ’cause well… pretty much everyone can aim and shoot a bow, as well as the Horse racing, for I do believe most can ride a horse in SL.

Me:  What is your personal favorite part about being involved in the RFL UAC Medieval Faire?

Ricci: Wow that is a good question.  I would have to say this whole experience has been my favorite part, but by far the knowledge that all of this is not only for the entertainment of the general public, it is also for a wonderful cause. I have been a strong supporter of the Relay For Life Foundation for a very long time, both here in SL as well as the RL. There is a very special reward in the feeling that what we have done here at the Medieval Faire will help people across the world that I will more than likely never meet or even know in the outside world.

Me: Is there anything you would like to say to potential participants in your events?

Ricci: Well as ye know another reason for this Faire is to introduce my love of the Medieval Role Play offered in SL. Shoot, I was in SL for 4 yrs before I even knew jousting existed here! So I guess my words to those who wish to participate but feel they do not have the skills is this: ” Do not worry about if ye are good enough.. Join in and have a little bit of fun. ” I am a firm believer in the best way to learn something is to just get out there and do it, and do not worry about winning or losing. It is the fun that matters. If ye find ye do love the fun and camaraderie, then there are a lot of places one can go to and learn much more about this wondrous side of Second Life. Or just ask me and I can point ye in the right direction.

Star Journey’s Grand Redesign & Re-Opening

SJ Poster_Landsc copy.jpg

Star Journey, a well-known and beloved sim by hundreds of Second Life residents since 2008, has gotten a complete redesign for 2016, and is having a re-opening kickoff on May 1, 2016!

In case you are not familiar with it, you are probably askingWhat is Star Journey?”.

Star Journey is two things: a method based on the Star Journey book by Richard Geer, and a place in Second Life developed by Richard’s SL counterpart, Starman Heron.

The Star Journey Symbol Method is a tool for self-reflection, based on the principle that answers to life’s questions can be found by looking within one’s self. Users explore a personal topic such as work, money, health or a relationship by using card symbols to play “games of meaning”. It can be used for solving problems, making decisions and exploring relationships. Star Journey appeals to people with interests in psychology, self-help and spirituality, and is used by counselors, therapists and others in the helping professions.

Star Journey in Second Life is a beautiful, 3-D immersive rendering of the tools, symbols and processes that are part of the Star Journey Symbol Method. On Star Journey island, a person can explore the Star Journey symbols and games in a tangible and visual way, either via self-guided exploration of the island, or though live group sessions led by Richard Geer (Starman Heron in SL) and his associate Gerry Marr (Dharmadog in SL).

Snapshot_003

One of the Lush Gardens in Star Journey

The island’s design was originally led by Rebelmum Slade in 2008, and was enjoyed and utilized in that form for years. But newer virtual technologies have enabled a more detailed, user-friendly experience. Luna Bliss, a well-known SL landscaper, and Fuschia Nightfire, a renowned SL artist, have assisted in re-doing the island to be more beautiful and immersive than ever. To promote the redesign, Max Kleene, a popular SL singer, is helping kick off the event on May 1st 2016, 2 PM SLT, with a live concert.

I caught up with the Star Journey creator himself, Richard Geer, to ask him more about his island, the redesign, and the re-opening event on May 1st.

Lorraine: Richard, can please tell me a little about the current iteration of your Star Journey island, and what you focused on in your redesign efforts?

Richard: In 2008 when we first launched Star Journey island, it was done by a group of friends, each creating a section of an overall design. Rebs (Vanessa Taylor of Australia) had the initial concept, vision, and acted as project manager of the builder’s group. We always thought a time would come when we could make it a more uniform and consistent design. By 2015, I was more involved in the daily management of the sim, and I decided it was time to update it as much as upgrade. The newer mesh tools and other technology growth were now in place to do so much more than we could back in the beginning.

Snapshot_017

The Amazing, Space-Themed Star Energies Area.

So I worked with some designers who had these newer tools and tried to re-imagine, collaboratively and with fresh eyes, how we could make things more appealing and easier to use. We essentially re-did everything. The twelve Gardens on ground level were redone to emphasize visual appeal, and a new landing area was designed in the center of these, a special open-air pavilion. On another part of the sim, we completely redesigned the twelve Gateway Art Galleries. These show the work of SL artists and also tell of the basic themes found in the Star Journey tool. We also greatly simplified our navigation, replacing our HUD with a simpler set of teleports. People can now walk up to symbol cards and click to get quick info in chat, or open a notecard with a page from my book. Finally we redesigned the Star Energies area, taking abstract concepts of energy types and making them fun, inspiring places to explore. And to support all this, I also created a full companion website that acts as a guidebook for exploring and using the Star Journey sim.

Lorraine: What are some of the activities, individual or social, that people can engage in at Star Journey?

Richard: Star Journey is a tool for self reflection, so in Second Life people can come and take a journey of personal exploration. They can be free-form or following a guided game of meaning. We also offer group sessions twice a week to show people how to use the tool, and these sessions have become a vehicle for people to share their experience with others.

While most of Star Journey sim is rather contemplative, our STARS dance club provides the accent of “rockin” live music and the people in SL who love to follow it. STARS has a 24/7 music stream for anyone to drop in for romantic dancing to contemporary music. And several nights a week we have musicians with their own live stream. Many come for an hour of live music, then stay either for dancing or exploring the sim.

Snapshot_004

The Futuristic STARS Dance Club in Star Journey

Lorraine: I love how you have represented the Star Journey symbols with immersive representations on the island. Can you tell me how the visualization of the Star Journey symbols helps people understand and use the SJ Method, maybe with a specific example?

Richard: One of the most powerful parts of the process of using Star Journey symbols is visualization. It’s a technique called “Picture Stories”, and it involves freely imagining how you interact with symbols within a mental scene. For example, a person in a recent group session got the symbol Lamp. When she shared her mental “picture story”, she described the light from the lamp making her feel warmth when she lifted the lamp up to light her way along a path.

The second part of this technique is the “best picture” where one consciously makes the mental image the best or most positive. In this case, the woman opened the little door on the lamp and the light came out and surrounded her, not only making her feel warmth and comfort but merging with her as she continued to walk the path.

We represent the Lamp symbol in Star Journey with a special Lamp room that looks like a fantasy forest, complete with a gazebo, books, benches, a waterfall, and fantasy lights all around. The environment of the Lamp room I think helped greatly in creating a mood that led this woman to her visualizations. This mental “best picture” also becomes the visual representation of how to deal with her real life situation in some new and constructive ways.

Snapshot_011.jpg

The Beautiful Lamp Room in Star Journey

Lorraine: Would you consider Star Journey a spiritual method, or can a person be non-spiritual and still enjoy using Star Journey to learn about themselves?

Richard: While some people with interests in spirituality do find Star Journey appealing, Star Journey is not a spiritual method. It is more of a psychological tool or game. Star Journey’s purpose is simply to help people help themselves. It takes you on a path of personal exploration, one that results in tapping intuition and gaining insights about your real-life situations through the use of interactive symbols and life-force energies. No particular belief system is required to engage with Star Journey, and people from many different backgrounds and beliefs enjoy our methods.

Lorraine: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about Star Journey or about your re-opening event?

Richard: I’m just very pleased that all this redesign is making a more appealing place and hopefully more rewarding experience for anyone who visits Star Journey. People need spots where they can come to relax, think about things in their lives, and get in touch with feeling inspired, and I think we have done that here. Talking does not do it justice, so we invite people to come and see the island first-hand.

The re-opening even is an ideal time to get acquainted with Star Journey. As a reminder, here is our Re-opening Event info:

Windlight (Sky) Setting  (if changed)

DETAILED RULES AND EXPLANATIONS:

1. YOU MUST WEAR AN OUTFIT FROM TAYREN’S OR HIG’S stores. It can be a “new purchase” (since January 1, 2016) of a regular price or sale item, a “previous purchase” from Tayren’s or Hig’s (before February 15, 2016), the “10 or 50 L” hunt item (we don’t care if you do the hunt or 50L version), or the specially marked freebies from Tayren’s or Hig’s stores on Heart of Darkness. Therefore NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY. You will simply qualify for different categories of prizes based on your choice of outfit. You may enter more than one category, you may use more than one outfit, and you may post multiple pictures (up to 4 per day), provided they are not very similar.

You MUST use a full outfit available from either Tayren’s or Hig’s stores for your photo. The outfit must be a design by Tayren Theas or Hig Bing. It must recognizably be one of our outfits, not just a small part of it like a hat, shoes or necklace, with the rest coming from some other store. You can tell by the package, contents, and enclosed landmark who is the creator.  Please wear all the main pieces of the set. You may customize your hair, skin, shape, shoes or minor accessories, but the majority of the outfit must be Tayren’s or Hig’s. You MAY blend Tayren’s and Hig’s outfits (since some of you asked for this).

This is the market on Heart of Darkness. There are several stores with full outfits from Tayren and Hig (we each have an individual store, and then some other stores have BOTH our items). Participating stores with our designs are clearly marked. Two other stores have just accessories (shoes and jewelry). You may use the accessories to accentuate your look, but the majority of your full outfit must be a creation from either Tayren or Hig. Our freebie and hunt items (also usable for the contest) are in our individual stores (Tayren’s Fantasy Fashions at left, and Hig’s on the right).

Stores HOD_001

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You will not have a higher chance of winning if you purchase an outfit as opposed to using one of Tayren’s or Hig’s specially marked freebie sets on Heart of Darkness. You will simply qualify for different levels of prize category. We are trying to reward individuality and effort, while being open to all. Everyone has a fair chance to win, provided you meet the conditions on this page.

b) You MAY use an outfit you previously purchased from either Hig’s or Tayren’s stores at some other time. If you do, you will qualify for the “Previous Purchase” category. NOTE: An outfit you won in one of our earlier contests counts in the Previous Purchase category.

c) If your friends are in the picture, the same rules about the costume apply to all people in the picture (unless someone is playing your pet animal, such as your horse or dog).

d) The outfit you use must be from Tayren’s or Hig’s stores, recently or from a previous purchase. Participating stores on Heart of Darkness that have our fashions are clearly marked with a sign. Other stores on Heart of Darkness are not participating and do not count.

e) You have equal chance of winning in your category or categories, regardless of whether the outfit you used in the photo was from Tayren’s OR Hig’s.

f) Your outfit in the photo will determine your prize category (new purchase, hunt item, previous purchase, or special freebie). You must enter your category along with the Required Info. We will use our sales records to verify your category if needed. You may enter more than one category, or even all of them if you wish.

g) Please refrain from using an outfit you used in one of our previous contests. We would not consider that very creative.

2. YOU MUST TAKE THE PICTURE ON HEART OF DARKNESS.

The picture must recognizably be a location on the beautiful Heart of Darkness island in Second Life. We must be able to see enough in the picture to tell where on the island it is located. There are many amazing locations available. You can be inside or outside.

SLURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Heart%20of%20Darkness/153/164/22

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You may use poses that are there, or rez your own poses (up to 30 minutes rez time is allowed on the land). You may rez minimal additional props (up to 20 prims) but you will be judged for how you creatively incorporate the existing props already on the island. Many objects have built-in poses, so be sure to explore!

b) NO SEX PICTURES, NUDITY OR SEX POSEBALLS PLEASE – the island is rated G. Lingerie is fine to wear but please keep naughty bits covered.

3. THE PICTURE MUST BE POSTED ON THE FLICKR GROUP by MARCH 27th, 2016, MIDNIGHT SLT.

HERE IS THE FLICKR GROUP: https://www.flickr.com/groups/holidayphoto/

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You may enter and post *different* photos, using different outfits or the same outfit, as many times as you like. Please don’t enter the same or highly similar pictures more than once, or have your friends also enter it for you. This will not help your chances of winning.

b) You may invite friends into the picture, but each photo can only be posted by one of the people in the picture.  If you have multiple people in the pic, only the entrant (person posting to Flickr) will win the prize, though you can split it with the others as desired.

d) Your photo having a lot of “faves” on Flickr will NOT increase your chances of winning the contest. This is NOT a popularity contest and not everyone has a ton of connections in there.

e) Please enter the required info into the Flickr description (or send it to one of us on NC with your picture in SL).

Required Info: You MUST enter this information on your description in Flickr or send it on Notecard to us.

Title of Work
SL Avatar Login name (not nickname)
Name of Outfit & Designer (Tayren or Hig)
Prize Category – Category 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Windlight (Sky) Setting  (if changed)
Special filters or editing done (if any)

Note: Some people like to add a story or description to their picture in Flickr, but it is not required. If you do for your enjoyment that is fine, but it does not impact judging.

4. THE PICTURE MUST BE HIGH QUALITY/HIGH RESOLUTION.

Your picture must be high resolution (at least 1017 pixels in one direction, the higher the better, either square or rectangular). Lower resolution photos will not be considered. Amateurs and Professionals alike are welcome to enter. If you are a professional SL photographer or fashion blogger we will weigh your picture-taking experience during our judging. Neither amateurs or professionals have a higher chance of winning.

If you are unsure how to take a high resolution picture, here is some good info.

Tutorial – Taking high-res blog snapshots by Strawberry Singh

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You MAY apply filters or effects in Flickr, Photoshop, Gimp or other software, provided it is still recognizably our outfit and our island. If you add filters or effects, please state as such on Flickr. Please don’t add things to the image that are not there, like real people, clip art, or bits from other photos or pictures. Over editing is not suggested. We want to see our outfits!

b) You may choose your own windlight settings, or use the one on Heart of Darkness.

If you do not know how else to take an SL picture other than the “snapshot”, read the links provided above.

e) We retain the right to use your entry photos on our island or within our SL store (for example for posting the winning pictures, for writing a blog post or notice about the event, for showing some worthwhile entries that were not necessarily winners, or for spotlighting the creative uses of our outfits by our customers). We will not use any photo without crediting you as the photographer, and we will not edit and/or otherwise use your photo to make our own clothing ads.

5. YOU MUST FOLLOW THE RULES POSTED HERE.

You must follow rules 1-4 PLUS enter all Required Info as we have asked for it. You will lose points if you do not.

To help make sure you have followed the rules, please include the following info your Flickr post (or send to one of us with your picture):

Required Info: You MUST enter this information on your description in Flickr or send it on Notecard or email to us.

Title of Work – so we can know how to name it while judging
SL Avatar Login name
(not nickname) – so we know who to give the prize to.
Name of Outfit *and* Designer (Hig or Tayren). Example – “Spring Fairy by Hig”
Prize Category – Category 1, 2, 3, or 4. See above for category descriptions.
Windlight (Sky) Setting (if different than our island’s default)

f) Following the rules posted here – 20 points. Enter all Required Info above or you will lose points. If you require reminding, you will only get partial credit. By entering, you agree to these terms. Read them carefully! Ask Tayren Theas or Hig Bing for clarification if you are unsure what the rules mean, or if we did not answer a specific question you may have.

Total of up to 240 points (120 from each judge), and the person with most points in each category is the winner.

So now have at it, and HAVE FUN!!!

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: CHOOSE A TEAM! Heart of Darkness or Heart Full of Love!

If you were with us in our earlier contest, you will know that our contestants were on Team Santa or Team Krampus. Thanks to you, Santa defeated the Krampus on Heart of Darkness and banished him. So now the island is trying to transform into Heart of Love! Can love overcome the darkness?

YOU can help!

Choose a team: “Heart of Darkness” or Heart Full of Love“.

Heart of Darkness team pictures might depict things such as “broken-hearted”, “crime of passion”, “single on Valentine’s day”, “lost love”, “regrets and sorrow”, “twisted love” etc. These are suggestions, you can use them or come up with your own.

Heart Full of Love team pictures might depict things such as “love at first sight”, “romantic dance”, “passionate love”, “hot couple”… even best friendship or family love! Again these are suggestions. The possibilities are endless!

You may do pictures for either or both teams if you wish (up to 4 per day are allowed). For people that depict either team especially well, we will offer special prizes and honorable mentions. So… surprise us with your ideas. Illustrate a story or depict emotions with your picture. And be sure to add your Team (Heart of Darkness or Heart Full of Love) to your picture in the description.

It must recognizably be one of our outfits, not just a small part of it like a hat, shoes or necklace, with the rest coming from some other store. Our outfits are in different stores this time, so participating stores are clearly marked with a sign.

Participating stores are clearly marked. Heart of Darkness valentine_002

NOTE: An outfit you won in one of our earlier contests counts in the Previous Purchase category.

c) If your friends are in the picture, the same rules about the costume apply to all people in the picture. However if someone is playing your pet animal for purpose of the photo (dog, bird, horse, etc) and is in full animal avatar that is fine, provided you as the entrant are in costume from one of our stores. I was asked this question, so I had to make up a rule about it.

d) The outfit you use must be from Tayren’s or Hig’s stores, recently or from a previous purchase. Participating stores on Heart of Darkness that have our fashions are clearly marked with a sign. Other stores on Heart of Darkness are not participating and do not count.

e) You can win in your category or categories, regardless of whether the outfit you used in the photo was from Tayren’s OR Hig’s.

f) Your outfit in the photo will determine your prize category (new purchase, previous purchase, hunt item or special freebie).

Here are examples of just a few locations on Heart of Darkness.

3. THE PICTURE MUST BE POSTED ON THE FLICKR GROUP by FEBRUARY 14th, 2016, MIDNIGHT SLT.

You can post the photo to the Flickr group, OR upload to SL and send it to Tayren Theas or Hig Bing, and they will do it for you. Instead of uploading in SL you can also send to tayrentheas@hotmail.com. TO GUARANTEE POSTING ON TIME, IT IS BEST TO POST IT ON FLICKR YOURSELF. The photo description must include all required info we ask for below.

HERE IS THE FLICKR GROUP: https://www.flickr.com/groups/holidayphoto/

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You may enter and post *different* photos as many times as you like. Please don’t enter the same or highly similar pictures more than once, or have your friends also enter it for you. This will not help your chances of winning.

b) You may invite friends into the picture, but each photo can only be posted by one of the people in the picture. You MAY have people on different teams (Team Heart of Darkness or Team Full of Love) in the photo, and that could be very interesting! If you have multiple people, only the entrant (person posting to Flickr) will win the prize, though you can split it with the others as desired.

d) Your photo having a lot of “faves” on Flickr will NOT increase your chances of winning the contest. This is NOT a popularity contest and not everyone has a ton of connections in there.

e) Please enter the required info into the Flickr description (or send it to one of us on NC with your picture in SL).

Required Info:

Title of Work – so we can know how to name it while judging
SL Avatar Login name
(not nickname) – don’t make us be detectives please.
Name of Outfit *and* Designer (Hig or Tayren). Example – “Valentine Fairy by Hig”
Windlight Setting (if different than our island’s default pink sky)
Special filters or editing done (if any)
Team – Are you on Team Heart of Darkness (depicts heartbreak, anger, longing, etc) or Team Heart Full of Love (depicts any happy love)?

OTHER DETAILS:

a) You MAY apply filters or effects in Flickr, Photoshop, Gimp or other software, provided it is still recognizably our outfit and our island. If you add filters or effects, please state as such on Flickr. Please don’t add things to the image that are not there, like real people, clip art, or bits from other photos or pictures.

b) You may choose your own windlight settings, or use the one on Heart of Darkness.

You should choose a high resolution and save directly to your hard drive instead.

5. PHOTO WILL BE JUDGED IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

a) Creativity – 20 points (unusual, different, captures the attention, is imaginative, tells a story, etc)

b) Composition – 20 points (good arrangement of items, colors, scenery and/or people, pleasing to the eye, etc)

c) Good use of the outfit – 20 points (shows it off nicely, fits you well, fits the setting well, etc)

d) Good use of the island – 20 points (choosing a good location on Heart of Darkness, good use of the props or scenery, etc)

e) Quality – 20 points (size at least 1017 in one or both directions, not pixelated, not too dark to see, not overexposed or too bright, etc)

f) Following the rules posted here – 20 points.

To help make sure you have followed the rules, please include the following info your Flickr post (or send to one of us with your picture):

Renaissance Island Celebrates 8 years in Second Life

Today I spoke with Amza Hydroconis, who (along with PrinceJ3rd Figaro) is a co-manager of Renaissance Island, one of my favorite historical simulations in Second Life. Renaissance Island is celebrating 8 years in Second Life this June 2015, which is a pretty amazing feat! As a result, there will be many special events from June 12th – 21st (Click here to see events and locations.).

The Beautiful Clock Tower at the Center of Renaissance Island

The Beautiful Clock Tower at the Center of Renaissance Island

Lorraine: What is Renaissance Island, and how is it supported?

Amza: Renaissance Island is a Tudor Era Region meant to immerse visitors in the life and culture of Renaissance England. We offer activities for people interested in learning about the Tudor era, within a very casual role-play environment. It was established in February 2007 by a group of librarians, mainly to be available to educators and library science students, but has grown far beyond that purpose and is open to all. Renaissance Island is sponsored by the South Central Regional Library Council, and is supported mainly by donations and rent from merchants and residents. Its goal, though, is to become as self-sufficient as possible.

Lorraine: Role-playing might sound scary to some. Does a person need to dress authentically or know how to speak authentic Tudor-era English to participate in role-play at Renaissance Island?

Amza: One doesn’t need to role-play at Renaissance Island, but it is fun to try. For some people, role-playing comes naturally, while for others it doesn’t (I’m one of the latter.) If you want to role-play we would require being in period clothing; but having the ability to speak in the vernacular of the era would take a great deal of practice! I have considered having a custom babbler [translator] made, which would be extremely helpful in the speech of the day. Meanwhile, we provide notecards with some speech and dressing suggestions on the island, and our shops offer free and reasonable period clothing.  There are some free Renaissance outfits on our hunt this month, and we always offer some below deck in the pirate ship near the pub.

Lorraine: What kinds of special things are happening for Renaissance Island’s 8th anniversary?

Amza: Right now, merchants have their wares on market stalls in the tiltyard [jousting area] for month-long sales, and there will be a mini-hunt in progress for the rest of the month.  We also have En Garde [fencing] for two Fridays, a Quadriathlon, which I recently introduced, for two Saturdays, there will be storytelling, a tour, our Parish Minstrel, Wald Schridde, will perform the 13th, before the Quadriathlon, a play in the Globe [ a re-creation of Shakespeare’s famous theatre] on the 21st then in the evening, fireworks and dancing. (see below for schedule).

Lorraine: What exactly is the Quadriathlon?

Amza: A Quadriathlon is an event consisting of four sporting events.  The Quadriathlon in Renaissance Island consists of Archery, En Garde, a timed horse run, and one round of jousting.  The scores from each event are totaled up to determine the winners.

Lorraine: That sounds like fun! What other kinds of activities regularly happen on Renaissance Island that people might be interested in?

Amza: Once a month we have storytelling and Wald Schridde performs in the Boar’s Head Inn.  I wish there was more activity for Globe, as I like to see plays there. Examples of plays we have had in the Globe include an abridged version of Twelfth Night, and in April 2015, Traveler’s Tales. Coming up on June 21st, will be a performance of Faces of Love:  Scenes and Sonnets from Shakespeare. There is a monthly Quadriathlon on the first Saturday of the Month.

Lorraine: How can people get involved with Renaissance Island?

Amza: People can become involved by joining the open Parish of Reading Primley group, to be made aware of what events are planned, renting a house, sponsorships, attend meetings and help with events.  If they are really serious in wanting to help, they would become a part of the community.  It once had a very vibrant community and I would love to see it become so once again.

Lorraine: Is there anything else that you would like us to know about Renaissance Island?

Amza: We consider ourselves a welcoming region.  No matter what avatar a person wears, if they have a real, genuine interest in what we are trying to achieve here, they would be more than welcome.

ArtFest 2015 in Second Life – Showcasing SL Art While Raising Money for Disaster Relief

Today I interviewed Huntress Catteneo, who for several years has been the Organizer of ArtFest, a yearly event going on now through the end of March 2015 in SL.

ArtFest showcases the works of some of the most talented artists in SL, while helping raise money for disaster relief. ArtFest is housed on the island of Eclectic Diversity in Second Life. It is a wonderful place where you can find 3-D sculptures, paintings, activities and amazing art experiences! Here is the slurl (Second Life account and installation needed), along with the interview describing more details about ArtFest.

SLURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Eclectic%20Diversity/135/193/22

How can this be this educational?

Art has always been a big part of education, and this place teaches about innovative ways in which people can express themselves creatively, three-dimensionally, and virtually. In addition, this exhibit offers items and help for new SL users, and can inspire them to become excited about a virtual world’s possibilities. Lastly, this virtual location offers information about the Red Cross/Crescent and the international work it provides for disaster victims.

ArtFest Main Entry Area

ArtFest Main Entry Area

1. Huntress, what is ArtFest?

ArtFest is a charity Arts event where people can enjoy the variety of art in SL and at the same time benefit people in need outside of SL.  100% of all money raised goes to charity.  Money is raised by people voting for their favourite art works via donations to the hope plants found in front of each artist’s area. You can also help raise money by purchasing some of the items by our Artists at the small market near the landing area.

2. How long have you been doing ArtFest and how has it evolved?

This is the fourth ArtFest with the first being in 2011.  It has come to be an event that some artists now look forward to being a part of, most doing so because they have not only the love of art, but because they also love the chance to use their art to benefit others.  Over time the variety of art shown has expanded, with this year even one person ‘building’ an outfit that is now not just an exhibit, but also being sold to raise further funds that way.

Wearable art that is also available for sale, with 100% of the proceeds for charity.

Wearable art that is also available for sale, with 100% of the proceeds for charity.

ArtFest was ‘born’ in a great rush of organization that took 4 weeks to get started.  It was in response at that time to huge floods which were occurring in 3 countries with great loss of life around the world.  Each ArtFest is to raise money for disaster relief, as sadly there is always something happening in the world.  Originally there were floods, but there has also been other major disasters like the Japanese tsunami, and NZ earthquakes.

3. How did you come up with the idea of doing ArtFest?

I have always loved art in SL, and know that people will happily donate just for the chance to look at it.  It seemed a great way to raise some funds as I knew a few artists who were happy to show their work with no expectation of getting money from that.  I wanted a way to raise money where people felt they were doing something good while also getting some enjoyment back.

4.. Can you tell me a little about the Art and the Artists we can find at ArtFest?

All artists are welcome to take part, and there has been many very well known artists involved along with some that have never shown work anywhere before.  The common thing they all share is that they generously share their work and time, which is why the ‘tag’ they have as group members is ‘Talented and Caring’.  You will see their SL names next to each art piece (scattered about the island), and the artists themselves are often here working on their pieces. They are usually more than happy to discuss their work with people, and often sell some items to further donate to charity.  Being part of ArtFest involves all egos being left at the door, and for this reason it has always been a great event.

5. How much money has ArfFest raised so far over the years, and do you have a goal for this year?

ArtFest has raised 30K to 40K lindens each event, which is not a huge amount in RL terms, so I would certainly love to raise much more..  I hope to get at least 40K during this ArtFest, and at the moment of writing this we have reached 22K.

Another amazing "experiential" piece of art.

Another amazing “experiential” piece of art.

6. What or whom will the donations go toward this year at ArtFest? Also what are the different ways in which people can donate?

All money goes to the Red Cross/Cresent for disaster relief.  There are many groups that compete for donations for good causes in SL, one of the biggest being RFL, and many are a very specific group or country.  I chose the Red Cross/Cresent, as it is an international body, is non political and non religious, and most have seen them come to the aid of others at some point. You can donate by right-clicking and “paying” a hope plant in front of your favourite artwork(s), and/or by purchasing items at our market, which features works by some of our artists.

7. What other sorts of activities can we find at ArtFest?

Friendly people to chat or dance with.  Rides and games.  You can visit our friendly catfish Fred (he offers rides as well), or just explore the underwater.  There is a playground in the sky that pretends to be a shop, as well as a movie set you can teleport up to and watch the promo film.  Balloons can carry you on the wind, or grab a bracelet so you can swim.  Finally there are places to picnic and sit and relax, and of course my favourite, FLYING BUNNIES! (I really really like those).

8. Is there any other thing you would like to mention about ArtFest?

We have flying Bunnies.  We love people to come and donate, but we are also happy for them to just enjoy as we know times are tough.  ArtFest is ever changing, new artists join at any time, and all artists are encouraged to build slowly so that there is always something new to come back and see. Oh and did I mention we have flying bunnies?

Thanks for the great interview Huntress! ArtFest is an amazing place and it is so awesome that you organize it yearly! Hats off to all the fantastic artists who participate. I love spending time at ArtFest, where I can enjoy the art, the many activities there, and feel good about supporting disaster relief through the Red Cross/Crescent. As mentioned above, here is the SLURL. You can enjoy ArtFest right now and through the end of March 2015. Hope to see you there!
